How do I know it is my Spirit Guides talking to me and not imagination or a malevolent spirit?

How do we know we’re really communicating with spirit guides or is it not a part of yourself that we are in touch with?

Questions to ask are: Does the guide/spirit control you? There is plenty historical evidence through all cultures and religions of some type of loving angel or spirit that comes to guide people along their way. And indeed these angels have been witnessed by hundreds of people. So are your spirits gently guiding and nudging you? Or are they pushy and controlling? If it is the latter, there are two possible explanations. A mischievous or malevolent spirit professing to be a loving guide or a part of yourself that you don’t want to face up to … like a psychological game you are playing with yourself. ‘He made me do it’. If this is so the likely reason is that you are denying a part of your nature: you don’t want to face up to secret motivations and therefore you have created a spirit/guide/entity within to force you to do things.

If your guides leave you to make your own choices; if they respect your freewill and don’t try to control you, they are loving guides. If you find yourself being led to places or into situations which are right for you but which you would not have not experienced if you hadn’t listened to your inner-voice, chances are, you are conversing with your spirit guide.

Are you becoming too dependent on your guides/angels? Are they becoming your emotional/spiritual/psychological security blanket? If so, chances are you are making them up in your mind. Real spirit guides and guardian angels will help and guide you and encourage you to believe in yourself. It goes against Universal laws for them to make you completely dependent on them for everything. If you constantly consult your guides, depend on their presence in your everyday affairs and to help you make decisions, create work etc. you may be low in self-esteem and you’ve created ‘guides’ in your mind so they get the credit for motivating you.

When you work with your angels and guides, what is your relationship with them? Is it relaxed, healthy, trusting? Do you trust them to help you in your spiritual work? Or to develop your psychic gifts? Many people who have a strong link with their guides/angels are called upon to use their gifts to help other people. They have a strong, constant need to spread love and joy around the world. Real guides and angels will teach us how to use our gifts in a way that benefits the world. They empower us to believe in ourselves and to believe in our ability to make a difference.

If you find your communications with your spirit guides and angels helpful, loving and inspirational, then it’s likely to be your true spirit guides you are conversing with.
