The Choirs of Angels
The Choirs of Angels
“For He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways." Psalm 91:11
Angels are there for you no matter what your beliefs, your religion, your culture. What are angels?
Many believe that Angels are a pure spirit created by God. Angels are lower than God but higher than humanity. The word ‘Angel’ comes from the Greek ‘angelos’ which means ‘messenger’ in the Old Testament. Angels are Heavenly Beings.
Theologians, studying the Old and New Testaments, identified angels as consisting of nine Choirs of Angels.
Seraphim – Highest order or Choir of Angels. The Seraphim are attendants at God’s throne. Of their six wings, two are for flying, two cover their faces and two cover their feet.
Cherubim: Second highest of the Heavenly Choirs. Cherubim are humanlike in appearance although have been described as having four faces: a man, a lion, an ox and an eagle. God placed the Cherubim at the entrance of the Garden of Eden to guard the Tree of Life.
The Thrones: Angels of Peace, Submission and Pure Humility. They reside in the realms of the cosmos where material form begins to take shape. The Thrones are living symbols of God’s justice and authority. They dispense justice with objectivity and without pride or ambition.
The Dominions: Angels of Leadership. Dominions regulate the duties of the lower Angels in the name of God. Dominions look like divinely beautiful humans with exquisite feathered wings. They are also believed to preside over nations.
The Virtues: The “Shining Ones”, the Virtues govern all nature and control the elements. The Virtues are filled with divine strength and have control over the sun, the moon, the seasons and the stars. They are also in charge of miracles.
The Powers: the Warrior Angels defend the cosmos and humans against all evil.
Archangels: Archangels are God’s messengers to humans, often at critical times in history. Gabriel, for instance, visited Zechariah to announce the birth of John the Baptist. St Michael has been invoked as Patron and Protector of the Church since Apostolic Times. St Raphael appears in the book of Tobias as the healer of Tobias’ blindness. Archangels herald great and glorious events and help strengthen peoplein their faith.
Principalities: Spiritual beings who instruct the lower angels in how to fulfil Divine Commands. Principalities direct the Universe and protect lands, nations and people.
Angels: Angels are closest to the material world, the hearth and human beings. Angels deliver prayers to God and bring God’s answers and other messages to people. Angels can reach any or all of the Choir of Angels at any time. They are caring, loving and anxious to help all who request assistance. It is believed that Guardian Angels belong to this Choir.
Angels are pure spirits. We cannot see them but they are all around us, all the time. If we believe, have faith and talk to our Angels, we become more aware of the messages they give to us, more tuned into their guidance and more able to feel them for ourselves.
"Millions of spiritual creatures walk the earth
Unseen, both when we wake and when we sleep".
